Going down in a blaze of glory

Written by Ron Saikowski, January 5, 2018

This pretty much sums up my Old School ability right now. I'd like to say that I'm a solid player with decent skills, but my record says otherwise. I suck at this if we're being honest. I will not be deterred though. I shall press on.

It's been a huge learning curve for me getting back into the game and playing online. Gone is the tiny meta in my local group now replaced with the worldwide meta. BIG difference. Sure, the card pool is the same, but how people use those cards never ceases to amaze me.

I'm two matches into the 2018 93/94 Winter Derby with one more match to go for Round 1 and with each passing game I'm learning a bit more about my deck and how best to play the cads I enjoy the most. My deckbuilding is not the best. Partly because I pay with the cards I like more than I play with the cards that might work the best or are an "optimal" fit/build in the theme that I have. If I had a theme. It's a struggle all around for me.

I know playing like that is going to create problems for me. I'm okay with that. I'd rather play the cards I love than play the ones that "win." I'm not the only person who feels that way either. It's just going to take me some time to learn the subtleties of the cards. The small interactions that turn average cards into powerhouses on the board. I'm not there yet.

I'd like to get to the point where I play Magic as well as I play Space Hulk. I'm far better at that game. But it's taken me almost two years of regular game play to get to that level. Magic will be no different. I love playing against people who are already there though. There's so much to learn in how they use the cards they have. The combos and interactions they create. The decisions they make each turn.

And I need to mention my opponents... every one of them has been amazing. And not just in the Derby. Across the board. Never any ill will or bad attitudes or overly competitive/nasty game play. I have nothing bad to say about any of the folks I've managed to play against online. That's perhaps one of the biggest joys for me above all else.

It's one thing to lose over and over... knowing that you're getting better with each passing game. But to be able to play against folks who want to play and have fun as opposed to beating in your face makes the journey a true gaming pleasure.
