Participating in the 2018 93/94 Winter Derby

Written by Ron Saikowski, December 22nd, 2017

I'm excited to be participating in the 93/94 Winter Derby being held over at the OLDSCHOOL 93-94 ONLINE TOURNAMENTS Facebook Group. I just signed up. If you are part of the Facebook Group and have the time to play in January, sign up!

I know it might seem odd to be getting excited about something like this, but I don't get to play all that often and a structured format like this really helps with getting games in. In all honesty, if it weren't for online gaming, I'm not sure I'd really play at all.
I've talked about the benefit of playing online as well; that article can be found here.

Left to my own devices, it's all too easy to find an excuse to start something else or tell myself I don't have enough time for a quick match online. Having the deadline even as far out as it is, makes me focus a little more and work on setting aside the time to play.

The format seems fairly straightforward, "common rounds" as they're called (each player matched up with a set number of other players to begin with) will run from Dec 28 to Jan 22, and top 8 will be played out that last week and a half of January. For as much as I'd like to think I'll make it to the top 8, I think I'm just going to shoot for better than my last online tournament showing of fourth place (out of five). At least I think I was fourth place. I know, not too shabby, but nothing to cause any real fear in my opponents just yet.

This kind of format is great for those of us with busy schedules (who am I kidding, that's all of us) since it allows us the time to schedule our games when it best suits our schedules and our opponents.

I have a new deck with some new cards to try out now that I've culled Stasis from my deck. That's my preemptive disclaimer so that when I post my results at the end of January I have something to blame. I certainly can't be expected to take responsibility for what will probably be described as a less than stellar performance. Just laying the groundwork now.

I apologize as I can't give away any more information on my deck as I don't want to tip my hand just yet. I need all the help I can get.

I do want to say a huge thanks to those responsible for putting this together. I've had the chance to run a few "tournaments" in my gaming life time and I can only imagine the work that goes into putting something like this together. It's a thankless job that often goes unnoticed.

When it's all over, I'll have a recap of all my matches that I'll put together into a larger article to recount my adventures.

Let the games begin!
